50 million people worldwide live with epilepsy, a debilitating neurological condition that involves recurring seizures. Epileptic seizures are caused by irregular electrical discharges among brain cells causing convulsions, loss of consciousness and severely altered senses.

Side Effects of Conventional Treatments

Traditional epilepsy treatment is a prescription of anticonvulsants, which are often ineffective and come with a number of side effects including headaches, nausea, hair loss, liver failure, depression, double vision, weight gain, slurred speech, impotence and mood swings. It is the ineffectiveness and multiple side effects of traditional epileptic drugs which have driven many patients to seek CBD oil as a solution.

Treating seizures with CBD oil is gaining momentum

Nearly 30% of epileptic patients are resistant to the traditional anticonvulsant drug treatments, making the use of alternative treatments such as CBD oil for seizures more relevant, gaining support from a growing number of medical practitioners.
In 2003, a US study noted that the cannabinoids from CBD oil provide benefits that aren’t typically found in conventional pharmaceutical treatments. The lead researcher had been studying the therapeutic effects of CBD on epilepsy and other illnesses for more than a decade.

His team was the first to prove that cannabinoids can decrease seizures via the activation of the brains CB1 receptors, which are found in the memory related areas of the brain and within the nervous system.

Findings from the study indicated use of CBD oil reduced adverse seizure severity and a reduction in overall seizure frequency.

So how does CBD help epileptic seizures?

Cannabidiol, or CBD is found in cannabis stalks and flowers and does not contain mind- altering properties. The plant contains 85 different chemical compounds called cannabinoids. These compounds work on different targets, altering the activity of the cells by switching how ions flow into and out of the neurons within the brain. Recent research is finding medications derived from the cannabis plant can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of seizures.
